lighting
beyond simple illumination.more than just
light levels
we trust our eyes so completely, we rarely question what we're seeing. but everything
you see is shaped by how it's lit. lighting sets mood, guides attention, affects how
people feel - often without them noticing. emittiv is a young dubai-based practice built on a long history in the field. our
roots are in theatre, where light is a narrative tool, not
just a technical checkbox. we've spent years obsessing over how light moves, how it
shifts through a performance, how a single change can transform a moment. yes, we're
geeks. the same principles that shape a stage can transform a lobby, a restaurant or a
public space.
dynamic
lighting design
spaces change through the day. lighting should too. our systems are programmable and responsive. colour-temperature shifts that mirror natural daylight. layered scenes for different uses and times. texture and pattern - soft shadows, dappled light, the kind of detail you
find outdoors. integration with video and control systems for coordinated effects.
theatrical techniques,
architectural applications
from entertainment we bring an understanding of timing, contrast, rhythm and emotional
impact. we design lighting that: creates focal points and hierarchy. uses colour as an emotional tool. supports wayfinding and spatial clarity. enhances materials and architectural features. delivers memorable experiences.
from concept to
commissioning
we stay involved through the full arc of a project - early concept, detailed design,
procurement support, installation supervision, programming and commissioning. we work as part of the client's design team ensuring the outcome matches the intent, not just the drawings. we use advanced 3d
calculation tools to model levels and coverage so clients can understand the result
before fixtures arrive on site. our documentation covers layouts, specifications, control strategy and programming
requirements - complete and build-ready.
independent
by design
we don't represent manufacturers. we don't get kickbacks. we specify what actually fits
the project - sometimes a high-end European fixture, sometimes a carefully chosen
alternative that does the job for half the price. if your "lighting designer" also happens to sell the fixtures, ask yourself who they're
really designing for. we favour serviceable fittings - replaceable drivers and LED
modules that extend system life and keep maintenance straightforward. the throwaway approach
might be easier to sell, but we'd rather not see our work in a skip five years from now. see our lighting work on The Sail and The Mosque.
questions,
answered
what does an architectural lighting designer do? we design the light, not just the fixtures. that means defining how a space should
feel and behave through light, then specifying the equipment, layout, control strategy
and programming to make it happen. we stay involved through commissioning so the result
matches the intent. where in the uae does emittiv work? we're based in dubai south and work across the UAE and wider GCC. most projects are
in dubai and abu dhabi, but we travel for the right brief. how do you approach hotel facade lighting? hotel facades are a hybrid problem. they have to read clearly from a distance, sit
comfortably in their context, and shift mood across the night without becoming a
billboard. we design with layered intent - silhouette, accent, dynamic colour - and
specify gear rated for gulf conditions. see the sail for an example. what kinds of projects do you take on? hospitality (hotels, F&B, spas), retail and brand spaces, cultural and
public-realm work, themed entertainment, and the occasional residential project where
the brief is interesting. if light is doing real work, we're interested. when should we bring in a lighting designer? earlier than you think. lighting is at its best when it shapes the architecture
rather than fighting it, so concept stage is ideal. we can also come in mid-project to
fix or rescue a scheme - it just costs more than getting it right first time. are you independent from fixture manufacturers? yes. we don't represent brands. we don't take commissions. we specify what's right
for the project - sometimes a high-end european fixture, sometimes a smarter-priced
alternative. if your "lighting designer" sells the gear, ask yourself who they're
really designing for. related disciplines: video · control back to services light as a sensory medium
